the joy of working

Lee Sung Gyu

Q.What kind of ‘OJT’ are you currently receiving?

Lee Sung-gyu (Lee): I’m receiving various kinds of education related to the whole production process. I’m learning and experiencing the overall production process of Tire and Industrial Reinforcements in detail. This is to enable me to better understand the job after I’m assigned to the actual work-site operations.

Shin Ga-won (Shin): I’m being trained to adjust to work life. So I’m learning office manners and how to draft documents. I’m also getting to know about our company more in detail by reviewing major issues that occurred in Ulsan Plant.

Lim Ji-soo (Lim): I’m learning the tasks of all teams in Ulsan Plant PU. So now I know how to conduct major tasks of Production Management department such as the production principles of products and present conditions. I’m also learning the tasks of other departments such as Technological Innovation Team, Global Integration Technology Team, and Quality Assurance Team.

Gwon Yong-hyeon (Gwon): I’m learning the manufacturing process in Ulsan Plant. I’m working hard to really get it, by using my eyes to see and my body to learn naturally. The energetic atmosphere on site makes learning more enjoyable.

Kim Young-joo (Kim): I’m learning the overall business of Human Resources Team of Industrial Materials PG Administration Center. I’m busy these days, learning about diligence and indolence, rules of employment, and collective agreement and performing related tasks.

Q.What do you think is the advantage of ‘OJT’?

Lee: I like the fact that I’m acquiring knowledge related to the overall business before starting to actually work on site. It’s difficult to start something if I’m doing it for the first time; and Hyosung’s ‘OJT’ helps me not to get worried about that in advance.

Shin: I feel the same way. ‘OJT’ helps me adjust to a new environment and make up for weak points. Moreover, I can dismiss the fears about my job and gain self-confidence. So I’m confident that this OJT is the best education.

Lim: Another advantage of ‘OJT’ is being able to obtain knowledge related to the actual job. I learned the process as well as the properties of products, and physical and chemical factors that affect the products. Based on such knowledge, I’m going to show my ability to the full in the future.

Gwon: Understanding the overall process of business as well as learning the details is another advantage of ‘OJT’. It was useful learning about the R&R (Role & Responsibility) of each department and the organic process from the beginning to the end from the training.

Kim: Of course, we can’t forget about the OJT daily log, which helps me obtain my own know-how. Everyone keeps the log really well, because it’s like creating your own business manual. It can be later used as a material to provide good knowledge to juniors.

Q.What new know-how did you acquire from ‘OJT’?

Lee: I learned how to write the best reports. I wrote down what I learned after ‘OJT’ and devoted myself to thoroughly review what I’d written. Thorough review is essential in order to find errors.

Shin: I learned how to work with active attitude. I felt that I need to find a solution if I’m faced with difficulties or something does not work well. Making a habit of asking your seniors or searching through related books can be a start for you to work actively.

Lim: I found out the importance of the question ‘Why’. As I received training, my senior frequently asked the question, “Do you know why this happens?” He was trying to tell be the necessity of attitude that seeks the causes of all phenomena.

Gwon: I realized that work can be done right only if I cooperate with other departments and employees. I naturally learned through the manufacturing process education that other people’s tasks are also important.

Kim: I can now look at the job from various angles. It is because I learned what I hadn’t known through my seniors when I wrote the OJT daily log every day. As my seniors present various issues related to the job, I realize that I’ve only been thinking about what’s on the surface. So now I’m always pondering over the relevance of jobs different from the topic. Then the OJT daily log becomes richer in content.

Q.What is the importance of Hyosung Way you learned from ‘OJT’?

Lee: I fully realized the need for Accountability among the four values of Hyosung Way. Everything about work life is based on Accountability, such as reporting to your boss, keeping the appointed time with clients, and punctuality in getting to and off work.

Shin: All four values --- Global Excellence, Innovation, Accountability and Integrity --- are important. Small but necessary actions like phone etiquettes, punctuality in getting to and off work, and preparing for meetings in the morning are only possible with Hyosung Way.

Lim: I consider Global Excellence the most important among Hyosung Way values. So when writing reports after I received the process education, I think, ‘How can I arrange it to be more readable?’ and ‘How can I put in more productive details?’. It’s an undemanding effort, because I think that the attitude of pursuing Excellence always leads to good results.

Gwon: I concentrate all my energy on writing reports too, but I pursue Accountability more than Global Excellence. It’s because I have an experience of revising a poor report many times before obtaining an approval. I obtained Accountability in the process, making multiple attempts and getting it done persistently.

Kim: I could also display Accountability through ‘OJT’. For employees working on the field, even the decimal point of each man hour is reflected on the wage. Thus, strong Accountability is necessary in order to carry out the task of keeping up with diligence and indolence without making any mistakes.

What ‘joy of working’ did you obtain from ‘OJT’?

Lee: I obtained confidence, which is the driving force to do everything well when I’m assigned to the actual work site. If I’m assigned with my job, I’ll be able to find out more ‘joys of working’. I feel proud just thinking about it.

Shin: I obtain ‘the joy of working’ by leading Hyosung’s growth. This is because cost control, which is my job in the Administration Team of Industrial Materials PG Administration Center, takes up a significant part for producing company profits.

Lim: Every moment is happy, because the act of working is the way to be a professional of a certain field. Before joining the company, I’d thought that I would only have to deal with my own tasks at the company. But after I became a Hyosung employee, I realized I had been wrong. My seniors, with their broad knowledge in work-related fields, are the teachers who taught me such things.

Gwon: Pride came to be naturally as I take each step toward becoming the best Hyosung employee. I think this pride will be good nourishment to help me pursue development on my own.

Kim: I enjoy the process of working by interacting with people. The Human Resources Team of Industrial Materials PG Administration Center to which I belong takes care of the personnel affairs of all the workers. So it is necessary to know as many employees as possible, which requires effort in building good relationships. Interacting with people sometimes gets exhausting, but I will try harder to obtain ‘the joy of working’ through it.

Q.What are the things you learned from ‘OJT’ that makes Industrial Materials PG attractive?

Lee: There are many businesses in Industrial Materials PG with high profitability. The most representative business is the tire cord fabric that has the top market share in the world. From this, we can easily state that Industrial Materials PG has infinite potential for development.

Shin: I agree. I expect the future outlook to be bright, because Industrial Materials PG has sufficient experiences and technical skills.

Lim: Industrial Materials PG is attractive in that it can be applied to various fields. The fact that it can make long-term profits instead of being a temporary business also makes it noteworthy.

Gwon: Industrial Materials PG has many top global products, so everyone can’t help but pay attention. This results from the challenging attitude to pursue novelty.

Kim: I think Industrial Materials PG is a place where Hyosung’s long-standing know-how is collected, so I’m really looking forward to the future.
