‘TANSOME’ is the first high-performance carbon fiber brand in Korea self-developed by Hyosung. This is the abbreviation for the Korean term for carbon fiber, and it implies the meaning of ‘creating new added value’ by combining the production process of burning carbon fiber (Tanning) and the word indicating something that is special and important (Something Special).

Let’s meet the Carbon Fiber Business Division dreaming of new value creation based on Hyosung’s self-development capability.

Carbon fiber is a state-of-the-art material replacing iron, as it is over 10 times stronger than steel yet has 1/4 of its weight. Carbon fiber is receiving attention as an ultra-light material that can be used in diverse fields such as sports equipment, aircraft fuselage, spacecraft heat-resisting materials, the automobile industry as well as the field of energy such as wind generation.

Succeeding in the self-development of high-performance carbon fiber with Korea’s first independent technology in 2011, Hyosung built a carbon fiber production plant with the annual capacity of 2,000 tons in Jeonju, Jeonbuk last year. This year in March, Hyosung launched its own brand ‘TANSOME’. It has finally begun to be commercialized in May, posing a full challenge to the carbon fiber market.

Many preparations were necessary to bring such result. Hyosung is equipped with a full line from the process of making precursors in the plant in Jeonju’s environment-friendly high-tech industrial complex to the process of plasticity with over 1,000℃ heat treatment. The company also conducted a last-minute quality test for commercialization in mid-May. The planning and sales department carried out pre-marketing all around Europe, U.S. and Asia with pilot products for over a year after the success in technological development, and pondered over the name of the brand that will further enhance our products.

Many people in the industry could not contain their amazement in the emergence of TANSOME.

These efforts completed Hyosung’s carbon fiber brand ‘TANSOME’. To publicize this brand and discover new clients, The Carbon Fiber Business Division participated in ‘JEC Europe 2013’. ‘JEC Europe 2013’ is the world’s largest composites industry exhibition held for three days from March 12 to 14 in Paris, France. Here, Hyosung’s ‘TANSOME’ received a great deal of attention from participants, visitors and industry officials. Moreover, to maximize the competencies necessary in businesses such as technological development, securing of quality and marketing to prepare for full-scale commercialization in May, Hyosung reorganized the formerly existing organization, ‘CB-Project TFT’, to the ‘Carbon Fiber Business Division’ on April 1. This reorganization was intended to develop the Carbon Fiber Business Division into the group’s key growth engine with state-of-the-art materials. This provided the Carbon Fiber Business Division an opportunity to display more of its ability.

The Carbon Fiber Business Division is planning to expand the carbon fiber production capacity from the current annual capacity of 2,000 tons to 17,000 tons by investing KRW1.2 trillion by 2020. The global carbon fiber market is rapidly increasing by 11% every year. Currently, Japanese competitors dominate over 60% of the global market share with the annual capacity of 50,000 tons ($2 billion). In this context, the beginning of new commercialization of Hyosung Carbon Fiber Business Division is expected to trigger the change of the market dynamics. We look forward to the day when Hyosung’s ‘TANSOME’ provides new value for clients while at the same time positioning itself as a leader of the carbon fiber market.

What is carbon fiber?

Carbon fiber has the structure in which the hexagon loop of carbon forms a consecutive layer lattice, and it has metallic luster and is blackish. Carbon fiber is super fiber with the strength of 35g/d and specific gravity of 1.8. It has good tensile strength and thermal resistance, small specific gravity, and excellent chemical stability.

First known to the world around 130 years ago when Edison carbonized bamboo fiber and used as a filament for the light bulb, carbon fiber was first industrially produced in 1971 by Toray based on acrylic fiber. Lighter than aluminum and with greater elasticity and intensity than iron, it is widely used as high-performance industrial materials in various fields such as sports equipment, aircraft fuselage, structural materials of vehicles, civil engineering and construction stiffeners, pressure vessels, and wind generator wings.
