Polyketone is a higher value-added industry. It is possible to purchase petrochemical material, which is a raw material of polyketone, with low price and this makes several fold increase in terms of added value, when manufactured. Because it has a wide range of applications from automotive and electric electronic and industrial purposes along with great knock-on benefits for many different industries involved, polyketone is regarded as a creative industry that creates jobs within the country and national growth engine as well. Japan and the United States focused on polyketone since the 1980s, but, despite their best efforts, none was able to commercialize it due to inadequate technical expertise. Our success in developing polyketone for the first time in the world paved the way to take an advantageous position in global markets. In fact, polyketone is expected to become the new driving force behind the country’s growth.

 

The development of polyketone is a remarkable achievement and reflects the depth of Hyosung’s R&D and production knowhow in the field of chemistry which it has acquired over the past 50 years. Polyketone, like catching two birds with one stone, turns harmful gas into material used for industrial applications, meaning it will be of great help in driving growth in the creativity economy.



Polyketone promotes job-creation and win-win growth with small business



A high expectation is being placed on new markets created through development of polyketone. That is, tremendous ripple effects together with the creation of new jobs across all related industries, including positions in polyketone development and parts production. Moreover, Hyosung expects to go full speed on development of premier material with focus on ‘quality of the advanced material’ and at the same time, promote win-win growth through partnership with small and medium-sized business.

 

Polyketone also makes a contribution to improving industrial competitiveness through mutual cooperation with small and medium-sized companies. Because of its use in various fields like automobile, electric and electronics engineering in addition to excellent properties, wide potential application, reliability, discovering new markets and job-creation, polyketone is expected to be the driving force behind win-win growth of companies who are set to demand it. Though there is a challenge of developing every technique required from raw material manufacturing to production, Premium-Ketone (polyketone) Project Group managed and supervised by Hyosung has assigned roles and made up what is lacked in the course of development.

In order to commercialize polyketone, many technologies are required from catalyst technology to reactor design and process improvement. Hyosung developed a new highly-active catalyst, about 2.5 times more active and improved the operability with the reactor designed using the system that prevents inflow of impurities into polymerization process. Plus, Hyosung has improved polymer control-ensuring process, completing the application and registration of a total of 160 patents - 133 patents in Korea and 27 patents overseas.

 

Polyketone is a new eco-friendly polymeric material resulted from polymerization of olefin and carbon monoxide, the main cause of air pollution. With its excellent properties, polyketone was a key target for commercialization by leading chemical companies in the United States and Japan since the 1980s, as they focused on its development, but, despite their best efforts, none was able to achieve it. However, Hyosung’s success in developing polyketone as a new polymeric material for the first time in the world paved the way for Korea to take an advantageous position in global markets. Moreover, this success in the world’s first commercialization of polyketone has great significance to Hyosung being the first domestic company to secure the original technology in the plastic material industry. 


It was all because of our efforts, which in turn, resulted in a new highly-active catalyst, about 2.5 times more active than the traditional catalyst and improved operability with the reactor designed using the system that prevents inflow of impurities into the polymerization process. Wealso solved the difficult problem by improving the polymer control-ensuring process. As a result, we attracted attention from many with our splendid achievement of the world’s first commercial-scale deployment of polyketone. We look forward to seeing outstanding performance of polyketone in many different industries.
